Ever question the cost of flour tortillas at the shop? You probably should – even though the cost has come down as more bakeries produce them.
Take a look at how much it costs to make and buy flour tortillas in South Africa.
Is it cheaper to make or buy tortillas?
It’s definitely cheaper to make vegan tortillas at home. But, it will take some time and muscle. If you’re short on time, then it’s worth adding tortillas to your Checkers shopping list.
Where would I buy tortillas in Johannesburg?
Though it’s much, much cheaper to make vegan tortillas at home, I can’t pretend that I’m so organised I do it all the time – even though these are definitely a staple in my house.
If I’m planning to make anything in the Mexican or Tex-Mex genre, I usually add a pack of tortillas to my list and pick the up wherever I’m shopping. That’s true whether I’m serving the meal with tortillas or not; they’re useful for sopping up the leftovers.
The one thing I wouldn’t do is succumb to the well-overpriced Old El Paso tortillas. These are great when you’re in the US, but once you add in the cost of importing them (usually for a cost of R95 for 8), you should expect an enormous leap in quality. You’re not going to get that. In fact, you’re going to lose some shelf-life.
But, truly, if I had my act together, I would just always make a double batch of my homemade flour tortillas and freeze half for later use. (Just layer them with baking paper between the tortillas for ease of use.)
